Aftercare
A tattoo is one of the most dynamic symbols of self expression ever created and it’s important to rely on the expert guidance of your tattooist for the proper aftercare of your lifelong treasure. You were or will have been tattooed in a modern tattoo studio with sterilized instruments and pigments, and after the process the artist will have dressed the tattoo with a bandage and an small amount of either A&D ointment, Tattoo Goo or some other appropriate healing salve.
These directions for healing will ensure the proper healing and life of your tattoo. If you have any questions about the care of your tattoo, please call Never Say Die Tattoo at (717)561-2594.
- Do not re-bandage tattoo.
- Do not apply vaseline, lanolin, or petroleum based products.
- Do not apply alcohol.
- Do not rub, scratch, or pick at the tattoo.
- Do not expose the tattoo to direct sunlight, swim or soak in a pool or bathtub, sit in a sauna or steam bath for two weeks prior to being tattooed.
- Be sure your hands as well as all clothing touching your tattoo are clean and soft.
A tattoo is considered minor surgery. It may bleed a bit at first, but it will stop within a few hours. We recommend that the tattoo be bandaged for no more than 3 hours. If the bandage sticks to the tattoo at all, rinse the whole thing with warm water and the bandage will loosen up.
Once the tattoo is exposed, wash it carefully with warm water, gently applying antibacterial soap with fingers ONLY. NEVER USE A CLOTH. Remove all surface blood, rinse with cool water, pat dry with a clean paper towel, and air dry. Once dry, sparingly apply a thin layer of A&D ointment or Tattoo Goo.
After 5 to 14 days, the tattoo may start to peel. This is normal. DO NOT pick or peel the skin away. Let it fall off naturally during washing or application of ointment. Fresh skin will soon replace the dead skin. Colors may fade during the healing process, but will return when healing is completed. After a few weeks the scabbing/peeling will have stopped, but the area may still be sensitive. Continue regular cleaning and switch to some sort of unscented, colorless body lotion such as Eucerin or Lubriderm. If you experience any reaction to any ointment or lotion, discontinue use and consult your tattooist ASAP.
